DIRECTOR: Ari Taub
This comedy classic short, shown worldwide, marked the debut of director/screenwriter Ari Taub and captured the spirit of low budget filmmaking in New York City. Jimmy a bicycle messenger from the Albatross Courier Company, takes us through the streets and boroughs of New York to deliver a package “on time”. Braving the perilous city streets, there’s nothing Jimmy can’t handle, or is there?

DIRECTOR: Peter Sutherland
Acclaimed NYC filmmaker and photographer, Sutherland is known for his work as Director of Photography on the skateboarding film "Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator" which played to audiences nationwide, as well as the photography book AUTOGRAF. Pedal is a fast-paced documentary film about surviving in the streets of NYC as a bicycle messenger. It features messengers from all walks of life as they battle traffic in a race to make their next delivery on time. It premiered in 2001 at the South by Southwest film festival and in New York at the Bicycle Film Festival, and later was acquired by the Sundance channel, where it aired until 2004.
The Bicycle Film Festival re-screens Pedal in 2006 to celebrate the Powerhouse Books release of Sutherland’s new photo book, also titled “Pedal.” The book features photos of messengers from around the world who came to New York in 2005 for the Messenger World Championships.

Three friends travel nearly 1,000 miles down the Pacific Northwest Coast in under two weeks. Two of them ride bikes, while the third surfs.

A man wakes up, feels like surfing but lives on the East Coast and so cycles across Ireland for a surf.

Kim Jensen the founder of MIDNIGHT RIDAZZ has given us a peek into the monthly ride that began as a fun Friday night amongst a few friends. These creative, celebratory rides have gone on to attract up to a thousand riders from around the Greater LA area. This has definitely left an impact on the way many live in LA. The mostly woman production team was lead by Elizabeth Ai.

Join cyclists Tonya and Guy as they embark on a journey to help put an end to cancer, and hear the inspirational story of Tonya’s brother, whose journey has only begun in his own battle with the disease.

A motorist has a confrontation he soon will not forget.

• ADVENTURE HIGH (ESTONIA // 2004 // DV 89min.)
DIRECTOR: Lino Niglas
Estonian, Chinese, Russian, with English subtitles. Five friends travel by bicycle from Mongolia to Nepal hoping to experience old-fashioned travel adventures. Their four month Journey leads them through diverse landscapes and harsh conditions in the Gobi desert and the high Himalayas. They meet great people along the way (Mongolian nomads, Buddhist pilgrims, and yak herders in the Himalayas). All five travelers are different and this is reflected in the relationships within the group. One of the bicyclists is the author of the film.

Septimus has directed videos for KRS-one, Mos Def amongst many others. Howard is an award-winning director of fine art films recognized by audiences at festivals and media such as Art Forum. Howard began to make a film about NYC’s chapter of the Black Label Bicycle Club and found himself vying to become a member of the group. Black Label is known for living a lifestyle centered on building bikes together, riding together, eating together, and sometimes living together. Black Label is more than just a bike club or a lifestyle – it is life. This is a rare look at a way of life that may challenge your own. Producer Fredric King of Fountainhead Films presents B.I.K.E. as the first of a series of intimate portraits of New York’s subcultures past and present.

BMX Riders take to some of the most congested streets in the world in Tokyo.

• JOE KID ON A STINGRAY-THE HISTORY OF BMX (USA // 2005 // DV 90min.)
DIRECTORS: Mark Eaton and John Swarr
Jesse James from "West Coast Choppers" narrates this film. It features legends like Scot Breithaupt who started the first organized races in Long Beach in 1970, to Bob Haro, who pioneered BMX Freestyle riding, and created the first BMX freestyle bike, to Mat Hoffman, who's personal sacrifices helped propel BMX stunt riding into the spotlight. Filmmaker Spike Jonze is featured as well. He was influential on the documentation of BMX through his photography and involvement in BMX magazines. These are some of the people who helped make BMX such a unique subculture. The directors have assembled a 30 year timeline packed with rare archival footage and interesting interviews to create a film which explores the history, trends, stars, and current direction of BMX stunt riding and racing.

Shot during the Cycle Messenger World Championships 2005 in NYC, this short highlights the checkpoint that won the “the best Checkpoint classification” award in the “King of the Streets” Alleycat.

DIRECTOR: Joshua Frankel
A short film about NYC Messengers in which all of the messengers are animated and all of the backgrounds and environments are in live action footage shot in Midtown Manhattan. By juxtaposing the animated messenger on top of the live action, the film highlights the peculiar relationship between messengers and the contemporary city in which they operate.

The Cannonball Run Scavenger Hunt follows 40 costumed riders on an outlaw street race across LA. Organized by Urban Bike Assault, the Cannonballers hit 8 checkpoints throughout L.A.-from an East Hollywood porn shop to a Methodist Church in Echo Park-while begging, borrowing and stealing 50 scavenger items. Awards handed out at a party with music by The Sharp Ease. It’s not what you got it’s how you use it. Cannonball!!!

DIRECTOR: James Connelly
A post apocalyptic world where “The Breath” can save a village will need the “chosen one” to ride into dangerous lands to find the key to survival. James Connelly has made an epic like short cast with Atlanta’s daily riding heroes (bike messengers).

• GROWING UP BARNES (USA // 2006 // DV 7min.)
DIRECTOR: Rodney R. Itier
Mickey 'Flash' Barnes was born into a family of diehard, daredevil stuntmen, but he hasn’t yet lived up to his family legacy. His future now depends on a battle between crews--his crew and the punk, girl biker crew lead by Debbie Kaplan. Will he jump the Venice canal, a feat that has not yet been mastered? Not only is his rep on the line, but the future of his namesake.

Characters at the Velodrome in Kissena, Queens bring the track alive. Kareem Black is a highly touted photographer and city cyclist known for his work with celebrity portraiture and commercial work and recently named by PDN as one of today’s top young photographers.

DIRECTORS: Mike Martin and Gabe Morford
Mike Martin, best known both for his fine art and commercial photography for clients including Nice Collective, Adidas, Nike, and Microsoft teams up with Gabe Morford a highly respected skateboarding photographer. They take a look at the style of fixed gear riding in San Francisco. This film, modeled after skate and surf videos, brings out the skills and beauty of these SF riders. This will surely be a landmark in an already emerging subculture of urban riders.

• A CONVERSATION WITH JORGEN LETH (USA // 2005 // DV 10min.)
DIRECTOR: Steve Olpin and Brendt Barbur
In 2003, Olpin and Barbur met up with Jorgen Leth at the Sundance Film Festival. Leth’s point of view on Art, Filmmaking, and poetry are as inspirational as his films: “I always thought that sport and cycle sport, which I’m in love with…deserved better than lousy sports journalism I thought it deserved to be sung about.”

• A SUNDAY IN HELL (Denmark // 1976 // 35mm 100min.)
DIRECTOR: Jorgen Leth
A rare screening of one of the finest cycling films ever made. It features the annual Paris-Roubaix road race, which taxes the energy of Europe's top riders. A Sunday in Hell is over 100 minutes of finely-calculated suspense that leaves viewers limp from pain and pure excitement. Don't miss this rare and amazing film!
